Be very careful when you help an addict or receive help from an addict. For some people giving or receiving help is a means to victimize others.
My peers and I were your garden-variety narcissists, sociopaths, egomaniacs, the addicted– we powerfully resented even the speculation that someone might have helped us. Interdependence is anathema to the self-involved, because interdependence goes against our ideal self image. It was of paramount importance that we were demonstrably better than the hoi polloi, and that we were verbally acknowledged as such.
One of two personas dominate within an individual who uses favors as weapons. S/He contributes to pitiful nonachievers (everyone else) out of a sense of noblesse oblige. Alternatively, s/he is always secretly thinking “LMFAO” at the fools (everyone else) who willingly parting with a resource they cannot afford to give but believe the histrionics of the taker. Gotcha!
Every “helpful” interaction with anyone serves to irrefutably prove that his belief in his superiority over the rest is irrefutably well founded. What’re you gonna do?
My extreme words have either correctly portrayed the incredibly uniform motives of an otherwise diverse group–or–unfairly stereotyped people whose existence I can only imagine.
