I Found Bleach and Here’s How I Did it in a World Obsessed with Sanitizing.

It is a sign of the times to note that discovering bleach (and Lysol!) for sale is newsworthy. I also feel obligated to tell you how a did it because I am a good citizen. The big chains, Walmart, 7-11, Safeway, etc., have been out of the aforementioned items as well as hydrogen peroxide, isopropyl alcohol, and antibacterial hand sanitizer/wipes since mid March 2020 here in Honolulu. Yesterday I checked the overpriced 24 hour store in Waikiki that used to sell crack pipes disguised as pens. Jackpot! I am proud to say I resisted the urge to hoard both bottles of bleach and only snatched the larger one. I have remained human in the era of COVID-19.
I hurried home with the coveted goods spurred by the memories of the many many times things had been stolen from me here in Hawaii. I was also motivated to get off empty Kuhio Avenue when one of the City and County guys, who was watching his co-workers powerwash the sidewalks, came up to me as I walked my bike to ask if I was alright. I awkwardly hung the large bottle of bleach in the bicycle’s handle bar and pedaled my wobbly, off balanced way home in triumph.

  1. I was lucky enough to be paying attention when it was still in China. I started squirreling away stuff since early February. I have extra if you need including masks. Let me know and I can see if I can help. The joy in your face posing with the bleach is adorable. The other parts of you are equally adorable.

    • Yes, that’s how we need to help each other. I have extra shampoos and I can definitely use extra bleach. We have to form a hui. For readers outside of Hawaii I have been told that a hui is a Hawaiian word that means, approximately, a support group.

      • The site where I saw your number posted before does not appear to be active. How do I get in touch with you without broadcasting phone numbers or emails?
